As households across Alabama monitor monthly living expenses and utility bills, the parent company of the state’s largest electric utility has posted a multibillion-dollar financial update.
Southern Company announced that its net income reached approximately $2.05 billion for the three months ending Sept. 30, according to financial figures. That total marks a notable increase from the $1.71 billion reported during the same three-month period last year. Across the board, corporate revenues rose 13% to hit $8.84 billion.
Alabama Power Earnings Rise Amid Surging Corporate Revenue
The state-level subsidiary mirrored the broader holding company’s financial growth. Alabama Power reported that net income available to common shareholders climbed to $661 million, representing a 12.4% jump from the $588 million recorded a year earlier. Operating revenue for the utility increased by 8.2%, reaching roughly $2.51 billion for the quarter.
When looking at the broader calendar year, the financial trajectory remains steep. For the first nine months of 2026, Alabama Power reported a net income of $1.52 billion, marking a 13.4% increase compared to the same timeframe in 2025. Meanwhile, Southern Company’s nine-month net income grew 16.6% to reach approximately $4.58 billion.
Driving Factors Behind the Quarter
Corporate officials pointed to several operational drivers behind the adjusted third-quarter earnings. Warmer weather patterns, increased overall electricity consumption, and steady customer growth all contributed to the higher totals. The utility also saw stronger revenue contributions from large commercial and industrial customers, alongside boosted earnings from Southern Power.

Those financial gains were partially offset by higher operating expenses and tax obligations.
Despite the upward swing in earnings and revenue, the corporate financial release did not announce any adjustments to Alabama Power customer rates. The report contained no indication that the increased profits would directly result in lower monthly bills for residential ratepayers.
Instead, the disclosures listed customer affordability as one of several ongoing factors that could influence the company’s future financial results.
