I regret the hardship caused to the children, of course. But the hardship has been caused by serious criminal offending by their father,
Judge Joel Bennathan said on Thursday. Russell Brand was convicted of rape and three counts of sexual assault. He faces a significant
prison term when sentenced on Monday. A jury of eight men and four women reached the decision after more than eight hours of deliberation at Southwark Crown Court.
Jury Returns Guilty Verdicts
Judge Joel Bennathan ordered Brand to be remanded in custody immediately. He cited the risk of flight. Brand gestured to his legal team when the bail request was rejected. He said, I’m good, I’m good, I’m good,
before officers led him away.
The jury found Brand guilty of raping a woman at his home in 2009. He was also convicted of three counts of sexual assault from 2004 and 2009. He was acquitted of two other rape charges and one count of attempted indecent assault.
Prosecution Details Predatory Behavior
Lead prosecutor Riel Karmy-Jones called Brand a ruthless, calculating, manipulative
sexual predator
who exploited his fame. The jury reviewed police interviews with six complainants. Their identities are protected under British law.
One victim met Brand after a 2009 performance. She described being anally raped at his home. She told him to stop, but he did not listen. After the assault, he told her, You need to clear up the mess you made.
Detective Superintendent Andy Furphy of the Metropolitan Police praised the victims. He called the outcome a testament to the extraordinary courage, resilience and determination of the women who came forward and reported what happened to them.
He added that Brand’s behavior showed that as his profile grew, so too did his sense of entitlement.
Defense Challenges Evidence
Brand denied all charges. He testified that he had been obsessed with sex
as a younger man but never forced anyone into sexual activity. His lawyers argued that the accusations followed a 2023 documentary that detailed anonymous allegations.

Defense lawyer Ian Winter suggested journalists had poisoned the well of justice.
He claimed they encouraged complainants to come forward years after the alleged events. Brand’s wife, Laura, acted as a character witness. She called him a caring and kind, wonderful father.
Brand told the court the allegations had a devastating impact
on his life. He said, My entire life has been consumed by these events, these allegations, these accusations.
His father, Ron Brand, spoke to the BBC after the verdict. He said the outcome was devastating.
