Apple has acknowledged an issue causing inner-screen cracks on some iPhone Duo units shortly after the foldable phone’s October 23, 2026, launch. The company is directing affected customers to AppleCare for replacements, while repair firm iFixit suggests the damage may stem from a potential hinge design flaw.
Apple Addresses Screen Failure Reports
Following reports of screen failures appearing within days of purchase, Apple confirmed on October 26, 2026, that it is aware of an issue impacting the inner display of a “small number” of iPhone Duo units. While the company has not issued a formal recall, an internal memo obtained by MacRumors reveals that Apple has provided service technicians with specific guidance on how to diagnose and address the cracking, which typically manifests as horizontal bright lines appearing in the center of the display. Apple maintains that most units are not susceptible to this failure and that impacted devices generally exhibit defects quickly after initial usage.
Apple advises owners experiencing these display issues to contact AppleCare for a replacement. AppleCare+ for the device retails for $399 upfront, or can be purchased for $199 a year or $19.99 a month.
iFixit’s Analysis of the Hinge Mechanism
Independent repair firm iFixit conducted a teardown of the device and identified a potential design point where the screen may be under excessive stress. Mokhtari noted that the center support bar might not always retract sufficiently during folding, potentially creating a stress “hot spot” between the flat bar and the bent screen inside a closed unit.
Right where the damage is happening, the hinge is shaped a little differently.
Shahram Mokhtari, iFixit technician
Mokhtari added that because foldable screens are delicate, a certain number of failures are expected, but indicated that if the same failure patterns persist in three months, it may indicate a more widespread design flaw requiring a redesign for future generations.
Users Report Varied Screen Damage Experiences
The reports of screen damage have varied, with some users experiencing failures almost immediately. Jesse Dalton, a user from Frisco, Texas, reported that he heard a “loud pop” the day he purchased the device. Another owner, Roneshia Smith, described her screen cracking less than 24 hours after purchase. These real-world failures contrast with results from more controlled stress tests. Similarly, a Wall Street Journal test machine completed 32,640 folds without noticeable wear.
However, independent testing has shown different results under extreme conditions. These variations have led to discussions regarding the difference between hinge longevity and early-failure risks. As noted by tech journalist Marko Nguyen, while many fold tests demonstrate how long a hinge lasts, they may not explain why a small number of screens fail during the first week of consumer use.

Expert Advises Monitoring for Hinge Resistance
Emily Stallings, co-founder of the accessory firm Casely, advises that users should monitor for warning signs, including unusual hinge resistance, cracking sounds, or unexpected display changes. There’s no benefit in repeatedly testing a potentially damaged hinge yourself, particularly if you’ve already noticed resistance or unusual sounds,
Stallings warned. She further advised users to treat the inner screen differently than traditional rigid glass, avoiding sharp objects or excessive pressure.
The iPhone Duo rollout, which represents the first major product launch under new Apple CEO John Ternus, has drawn comparisons to previous hardware controversies, such as the “bendgateissue with the iPhone 6 Plus or the
Antenna Gate” with the iPhone 4. While some analysts suggest Apple’s entry into the foldable market was delayed compared to competitors like Samsung—which launched its first foldable in 2019—others note that Apple is now facing the same technical hurdles that other manufacturers encountered years ago. Apple has stated that the response from early users has been positive and that developers are rapidly updating apps to suit the device’s unique form factor.
