Greenville Police Conclude Investigation Into Hayden Panettiere’s Death

The Greenville Police Department has officially closed its investigation into the death of actor Hayden Panettiere, ruling the case an accidental drug overdose with no suspects. The decision follows a September coroner’s report detailing the fatal medical examiner’s findings, which brought an end to the local inquiry without any criminal charges being laid.

Panettiere died at the age of 36 on August 16, 2026, after being found unresponsive in an apartment located at Judson Mill Lofts on Easley Bridge Road in Greenville, South Carolina. According to the Greenville County Coroner’s Office, her death resulted from the toxic effects of several substances, including fentanyl, its chemical byproduct 4-ANPP, the antianxiety medication alprazolam, methocarbamol, and quetiapine. Paramedics had responded to a 911 call reporting a cardiac arrest, performing advanced resuscitation efforts for more than 40 minutes before pronouncing her dead at 2:32 PM.

Investigators Recover Fentanyl and Drug Paraphernalia from Rental Property

Investigating officers and medical personnel recovered multiple items from the rental property during their initial response. A senior deputy coroner discovered blue pressed pills and a straw on a table that tested positive for fentanyl, alongside a white powdery substance found inside a sunglasses case in Panettiere’s suitcase. The autopsy confirmed no signs of physical trauma that could have contributed to her death.

At the time of the incident, Panettiere was accompanied by her on-and-off boyfriend Brian Hickerson and his brother, Zach Hickerson. Police reports noted that Zach appeared visibly emotional while emergency responders attempted resuscitation, whereas Brian did not become emotional until after the actress was pronounced deceased. The couple had recently reunited following the lifting of a five-year protective order in April. While local police have concluded their work, the Drug Enforcement Administration was also reportedly investigating the circumstances surrounding the death, though federal authorities have not yet delivered a public update.

Public Reflection on the Pressures of Early Fame

Panettiere starred in the television series Heroes and appeared in Nashville. In the months leading up to her passing, she had spoken candidly about the lifelong challenges stemming from her introduction to the entertainment industry at an early age. In her memoir This Is Me, released in May, she detailed struggles with alcohol addiction and postpartum depression following the 2014 birth of her daughter, Kaya, with Ukrainian boxer Wladimir Klitschko.

In a May interview on the Jay Shetty Podcast, Panettiere described feeling as though she had lost her identity while attempting to manage anxiety and public expectations.

Panettiere is survived by her 11-year-old daughter, Kaya. Following the actress’s death, Wladimir Klitschko initiated legal steps to be appointed temporary guardian of the estate to secure their daughter’s inheritance.
