The New York Knicks issued a statement on Friday defending Taylor Swift after two players questioned the authenticity of the pop superstar’s fandom. The team moved quickly to address the comments to prevent potential tension with the singer.
“Taylor Swift has been a Knicks fan for many years, has a long history with Madison Square Garden, and we are incredibly appreciative of her support of the organization,” a team spokesperson said.
Player comments during livestream
The controversy began during an NBA 2K livestream titled “Deflected,” where guards Tyler Kolek and Miles McBride were asked to identify the least authentic celebrity fan they had seen courtside at an NBA game.
Q “Who’s the fakest celeb fan you’ve seen courtside?” Tyler Kolek “Maybe Taylor Swift?” Deuce McBride “I would agree…Swifties not gonna like that answer” Kolek “I’m gonna get some hate…I guess she’s got a lot going on…can’t come all the time…but it’s a little performative” pic.twitter.com/r7v4AJBK04
Kolek suggested that many celebrities at Madison Square Garden are “performative” because they “just want to be seen at the game” rather than being actual fans. When asked to name a specific individual, Kolek responded, “Probably Taylor Swift.”
McBride agreed with the assessment, though he noted, “Swifties not gonna like that answer.” While McBride did not name Swift specifically, he identified actor Ben Stiller and comedian Tracy Morgan as “solid” and more committed supporters. Kolek acknowledged the potential for backlash, stating, “I’m going to get some hate from the Swifties. I guess she’s got a lot going on, so she can’t come all the time, but … it’s a little performative.”

Swift’s recent Knicks appearances
Swift has attended several high-profile games, including Game 4 of this year’s NBA finals against the San Antonio Spurs. During that game, she sat courtside with Mariska Hargitay and musicians Alana and Este Haim, wearing a royal blue “Stevie Knicks” T-shirt that became a viral trend.
However, questions regarding her allegiance surfaced after she attended a game in the Eastern Conference finals in Cleveland. She was present at that game with her husband, Travis Kelce, a longtime Cleveland sports fan, while the Cavaliers were playing the Knicks.
Swift’s connection to the arena extends back to 2003, when she performed at a Knicks half-time talent contest as a 13-year-old. She and Kelce also married at Madison Square Garden in July 2026.
