Physical PlayStation 5 discs for Resident Evil Requiem generated more revenue than every digital and physical Xbox version combined, according to sales data published by Alinea Analytics in October 2026, showing that platform performance is diverging as Sony moves away from physical media.

Capcom’s survival horror release has surpassed $500 million in total revenue, shifting 8.5 million copies across personal computers, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S hardware. Yet sales distribution across those platforms reveals an uneven landscape. While personal computers via Steam accounted for 43.4 percent of sales—around 3.69 million copies—and PlayStation 5 captured 48.1 percent—representing roughly 4.01 million copies—Xbox secured just 8.6 percent—translating to roughly 731,000 copies.

The gap widens further when isolating physical media. Analyst Rhys Elliott reported that disc sales alone on Sony’s console accounted for 30.2 percent of the game’s revenue on that platform, yielding 1.3 million physical units sold. Those PlayStation disc sales alone earned 1.8 times more revenue than all combined digital and physical copies distributed on Microsoft systems.

PlayStation 5 Sales Outpace Xbox Series X/S Totals

The stark sales divide arrives against a backdrop of differing console adoption rates. Sony’s PlayStation 5 shipped 95.3 million units by June, six years into its commercial lifecycle. Microsoft, which stopped disclosing console sales numbers years ago, operates far behind; industry estimates place Xbox Series X/S totals at slightly over 35 million units, trailing the previous-generation Xbox One, which managed 58 million units.

That hardware gap does not entirely account for the software disparity. While lower console penetration explains part of the shortfall, Xbox performance on third-party releases lags behind hardware distribution models. Analysts point to historical franchise loyalties, noting that the Resident Evil series has historically enjoyed more support, particularly in Japan where Xbox has struggled to gain traction.

Physical Media Trends Across Sony Hardware

The figures surface as Sony phases out physical media production for the PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro. Despite high-profile single-player titles retaining strong disc interest—such as Marvel's Wolverine achieving a 32.3 percent physical sales share—overall physical revenue remains a minority. Total physical game sales revenue for 2026 releases on PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 amounted to $655 million, accounting for less than 20 percent of yearly sales revenue due to the dominance of digital-only releases and pre-order incentives.

Game Title Physical Sales Share Physical Units Sold
Marvel’s Wolverine 32.3% 799,000
Resident Evil Requiem 30.2% 1,300,000
007 First Light 29.0% 873,000

Market preferences split sharply by genre. Narrative, single-player games maintain high disc attachment rates, whereas sports titles rely overwhelmingly on digital downloads. PlayStation’s top-selling game, FC 27, derived only 8.9 percent of its sales from physical media, though that still represented 705,000 physical copies sold. Meanwhile, titles like Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced shifted 613,000 physical units, and Crimson Desert recorded 511,000 physical sales.

Cultural Adoption in Japan and the Digital Push

Regional habits continue to influence physical distribution. In Japan, physical media retains a firmer grip on consumer spending, especially for domestic franchises and first-party titles. Japan is responsible for 12 percent of Onimusha’s sales and 11 percent of Pragmata’s sales. Games such as Pragmata and Onimusha: Way of the Sword saw physical sales shares of 44 percent and 44.1 percent, respectively.

To shift these habits, Sony launched the digital-only, Japan-exclusive PS5 Black for $350, offering a separately sold disc drive priced at $75. Analysts interpret the hardware configuration as a deliberate strategy to nudge regional consumers toward digital distribution.

Sony Maintains Discless Strategy Despite Consumer Opposition

Sony’s pivot away from discs has provoked sustained user opposition. Speaking on the shift, PlayStation founder Ken Kutaragi observed that optical media had evolved into a metaphor for ‘owning’ games, suggesting that consumer upset stems primarily from a mentality issue rather than functional limitations.

Despite the backlash, Sony maintains its trajectory. Higher profit margins on digital distribution and the elimination of second-hand market competition reinforce the company’s commitment to a discless future.
