Union Cabinet Approves Two-Year Extension for Agniveers

The Union Cabinet cleared a scheme on November 4, 2026, allowing the absorption of 25% of Agniveers into regular forces based on merit, while offering the remaining 75% an additional two-year engagement period, Chief of Defence Staff General N.S. Raja Subramani announced at the National Media Centre in New Delhi. Under the original Agnipath framework launched in June 2022, recruits between 17.5 and 23 years old served a short-term tenure of four years across the Army, Navy, and Air Force, with only one-fourth of each batch eligible for permanent retention.

When this extended two-year engagement period concludes, all willing Agniveers will be inducted into the armed forces subject to objective selection criteria, according to the CDS. Union Defence Minister Rajnath Singh stated on X that the decision is a way forward to prepare India’s military for the changing character of warfare.

The policy shift arrives as approximately 18,000 personnel from the 2022 cohort approach the completion of their initial four-year term in December 2026, out of roughly 300,000 total Agniveers currently serving. Monthly pay packages will increase during the extension, rising to Rs 43,500 in the fifth year and Rs 47,500 in the sixth year, accompanied by a revised 30:70 contribution split between the Agniveer and the government yielding a Seva Nidhi amount for the two-year period of Rs 10.92 lakh.

Congress Labels Cabinet Decision Election-Driven U-Turn

The Congress party labeled the cabinet’s decision a “U-turn” driven by upcoming assembly elections in Uttar Pradesh, Punjab, and Uttarakhand, where large numbers of young people seek military careers. Congress MP Pawan Khera questioned the long-term prospects of personnel who might still face separation after the extended six-year window, noting that if an Agniveer is not retained even after the six years, then there will be no reservation for them in any government jobs.

Procedural modifications accompanying the announcement include a shift to conduct written examinations before the physical test during recruitment, alongside the issuance of skill certificates recognizing the training and experience gained during service.
