Hamish Brown secures DP World Tour return with Scottish-rooted name
Danish golfer Hamish Brown discussed his return to an international championship and the confusion surrounding his Scottish-sounding name. The 27-year-old secured a place on the DP World Tour, marking a successful bounce-back after failing to retain his playing rights last season.
Brown’s father is from Scotland, having lived in Perth and Blairgowrie before moving to Copenhagen in 1985 to teach golf. Because of this family background, announcers at tournaments—particularly when Brown plays in Scotland—frequently suspect a clerical error when they read his name alongside Denmark as his home country.
“It is always fun having those situations,” Brown told Yahoo Sports, noting that players and fans on tour have a regular saying for him: “I am Hamish and I am Danish.”
Conversations on tour and ties to St Andrews
“It is a very Scottish name,” Brown said. “It is always fun having those situations when I get over there [Scotland] and people being like ‘what is that story about your name?’ and then it makes sense when I explain it to them. It has been a start of a good few conversations.”
Brown noted that he feels at home when visiting Scotland and maintains close friendships there. Having bounced back at the first attempt to regain his DP World Tour card, one of his primary goals is qualifying for next summer’s Open Championship at St Andrews.
Recalling his experience attending the 2022 Open at St Andrews on the Tuesday and Thursday, Brown said, “I was there on Tuesday and Thursday to see and I just felt like ‘wow’. It doesn’t get bigger for me. That is my ultimate golfing goal, walking up 18 at St Andrews and having a shot at winning The Open – that is my Holy Grail.”

“I have been lucky growing up and going over there a lot and seeing what Scotland has to offer, especially in the golfing side,” Brown added.
