A severe Wednesday night storm packing tight radar rotation and an apparent debris signature ripped through the northeastern Arizona community of Heber-Overgaard, knocking down power lines, shattering windows, and leaving at least one person injured.
Storm Conditions and Radar Signatures Over Heber-Overgaard
A powerful upper-level low parked off the coast of California pulled record tropical moisture into the Southwest, fueling a rare Level 3 of 5 severe weather risk for central and eastern Arizona on Wednesday. High winds aloft created an environment where Mogollon Rim storms could easily rotate.

Radar velocity data captured very strong inbound and outbound winds side by side right over Overgaard. That pattern revealed tight rotation sitting directly above the town, with the most intense rotation appearing just south of State Route 260 near the community center. At the same time, radar picked up an apparent debris signature indicating that tree limbs, leaves, and building materials had been lifted into the air.
Impact on Residents and Property Damage Along State Route 260
The storm struck Wednesday evening around 7 p.m., bringing hail up to 1.25 inches and unleashing a sudden burst of violent wind that lasted less than a minute. State Rep. Walt Blackman reported that the storm caused considerable damage
in the Heber-Overgaard area, leaving at least one person hurt and knocking down power poles.

Navopache Electric Cooperative reported power outages across the region, though officials could not immediately state how many customers were affected or when service would return. The Navajo County Sheriff’s Office responded to a major incident in Overgaard and urged motorists to avoid State Route 260 between Mogollon and the Overgaard Airpark, as well as areas north of State Route 377 extending toward Tonto.
I was in the kitchen, and I just heard the sounds outside were not normal. The wind, the house started getting pelted with debris.
Betty Nixon, Heber resident of eight years
Nixon added that she sought shelter on the floor with her dogs as a neighbor’s tree came down in her yard and another neighbor’s windows reportedly shattered. I had no warning whatsoever,
she said, describing the intense winds. It was just this horrible sound of wind and flying debris crashing against the house. And that was my first warning.

Emergency Response and Calls for State Assistance
The National Weather Service issued a tornado warning at 7:03 p.m. covering Aripine and Heber-Overgaard as the storm moved through. Because tornadoes are uncommon in Arizona—especially in late October—meteorologists rely on ground surveys to examine tree damage, structural impacts, and debris patterns before making a final confirmation.
In response to the destruction, Blackman urged Gov. Katie Hobbs to declare a state of emergency for the affected region. Our immediate priorities must be protecting lives, restoring electrical service, ensuring public safety, and providing assistance to families whose homes and property have been damaged,
Blackman stated.
