US Secretary of State Marco Rubio urged Israel to crack down on West Bank violence following attacks on European diplomats and an American photojournalist. Washington Post journalist Heidi Levine was hospitalized with severe injuries after a brutal assault by masked settlers during the annual olive harvest on October 16, 2026.

Heidi Levine Hospitalized After Brutal Assault Near Ramallah

Heidi Levine, a veteran photojournalist for The Washington Post, was documenting a coordinated raid by Israeli settlers in the Palestinian village of Abu Falah when she was targeted. Wearing a protective vest marked PRESS and a helmet, Levine and a group of other journalists were chased down by roughly 80 masked settlers who descended from a nearby hill on October 16, 2026. Witnesses reported that the assailants burned olive trees and threw rocks at Palestinian villagers before turning on the press.

The attackers knocked Levine to the ground, stripping her of her camera gear, phone, and passport before launching a prolonged physical assault. They just kept kicking me and kicking me, like probably 50 times, Levine told Truthout from her hospital bed. She added that her flak jacket and helmet likely saved her life during the beating, which lasted more than 10 minutes. Palestinian colleagues and bystanders eventually intervened, allowing American journalist Jasper Nathaniel and local medics to pull her to safety. Levine was rushed to a clinic in Abu Falah before being transferred to a hospital in Ramallah and later undergoing surgery for broken ribs, hand injuries, and multiple contusions.

The brutal beating of Heidi Levine is neither isolated nor the first on a journalist covering the olive harvest in the West Bank. It’s part of a disturbing pattern of violence and harassment against journalists regardless of their nationalities.

Diplomats Target of Separate Attack in Taybeh Village

Just 48 hours after the assault on Levine, a visiting delegation of European diplomats faced a similar ambush. Diplomats from France, Belgium, and Poland were targeted by Israeli settlers in the West Bank village of Taybeh while accompanying local farmers. Bernard Baudoux, the 78-year-old mayor of the northern French town of Aulnoye-Aymeries, was wearing a tricolour sash when masked attackers assaulted the group with iron bars and hurled defamatory remarks about France.

I think that if settlers are behaving like this, there is a tolerance on the part of the Israeli government, Baudoux stated after surviving the attack. French Foreign Minister Jean-Noel Barrot demanded that Israel urgently halt this criminal violence and guarantee the safety of civilian populations under international law. While the Israel Defense Forces stated that soldiers arrived only after the rioters had fled the Taybeh scene, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu cast doubt on the circumstances, suggesting the diplomatic incident lacked compelling evidence and might be part of a coordinated smear campaign.

Washington Post Rejects Official Doubts as Condemnation Mounts

The Prime Minister’s Office released statements arguing that the facts surrounding Levine’s assault remain unclear and are under investigation, pointing to clashes involving roughly 200 Arabs and far-left activists. That official skepticism drew an immediate rebuke from newspaper leadership. Matt Murray, executive editor of The Washington Post, responded directly on X to assert that the photographer’s press markings and physical injuries were indisputable facts.

International pressure intensified as United States officials demanded swift legal consequences. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told reporters that President Donald Trump and his administration were very disturbed by the images and had asked Israeli authorities to crack down on regional friction. US Ambassador to Israel Mike Huckabee categorized the assault on Levine as a despicable act of terror carried out by masked cowards, calling for a full investigation, arrest, and prosecution to the fullest extent of the law. President Isaac Herzog also reached out directly to Levine in the hospital, apologizing for the violence and condemning the perpetrators’ behavior.

Rising Harvest Violence Ahead of Israeli Elections

The October violence coincides with the traditional annual olive harvest, a cultural cornerstone for Palestinians that has faced severe disruption. Human rights monitors and monitoring groups have recorded at least 234 harvest-related attacks since September 27, 2026. Activists and monitors attribute the surge to emboldened right-wing sentiment as politicians attempt to shore up political bases ahead of bitterly contested elections scheduled for October 27, 2026. With approximately 500,000 Israelis and 3 million Palestinians living across the territory, security forces have faced mounting international scrutiny over whether enforcement actions match the rising tide of settler aggression.
