Police Track Suspect Using Store Security Footage

Anchorage Police Chief Sean Case stated during a Thursday evening press conference that the initial report came in at 10:05 a.m. regarding a burglary at a business located on Lore Road, a few miles north of the shooting location. Officers subsequently responded to the Carrs-Safeway grocery store on Huffman where the suspect was located. Law enforcement officials reviewed security footage from the store and discovered an article of clothing worn by the individual, which assisted them in tracking the suspect down.

Parking Lot Altercation

Officers located the suspect at approximately 1:40 p.m. in the parking lot. An altercation ensued during which the suspect fired one shot. Case reported that the suspect and one officer went to the ground before a second officer arrived and fired a single shot at the suspect. Emergency medical care was administered at the scene, but the suspect was pronounced dead. No other officers sustained injuries. Officer body-worn camera and dash cam footage were recorded during the incident.

The police investigation cordoned off a section of the parking lot that contains businesses including Over the Rainbow Toys and Seawolf Physical Therapy, though authorities noted that no roads were closed in the area. A reporter at the scene observed a body on the ground covered by a sheet near Industry Way, close to the corner of Old Seward and Huffman Road, while police initially reported a large officer presence.

Chief Case described the incident as part of a crime wave that has just been causing all sorts of havoc in Anchorage, and praised the department’s response to the fast-moving situation.
