Austin weather: cloudy, cool, rainy weekend ahead

Rain arrives in Austin as a western low pressure system moves into Texas. The pieces of the rain puzzle are slowly coming together over the next 48 hours in Austin, Texas, where FOX 7 meteorologist Zack Shields reported that the area is waiting for the western low to pivot into Texas. The system will pull in clouds and enough moisture to produce a widespread rain event lasting from Sunday through Monday.

Saturday will remain mostly dry with less sunshine, though the first wave of spotty light rain is expected to enter the picture Saturday evening. Coverage and intensity will then increase for the first half of Sunday. Forecasters note that the rain will be steady and last for hours, though torrential downpours are not anticipated.

Rain Totals Climb Near Austin and San Antonio

Rain totals are trending higher for much of the area. The highest totals, ranging from 1 to 3 inches, are expected to occur just south and west of Austin.

Some areas face a slight to marginal risk of flooding. The slight risk of excessive rain that could lead to flooding is moving further north, encompassing San Antonio and the western Hill Country. Forecasters are not expecting river flooding or life-threatening flash flooding, but ponding on roads and minor street flooding cannot be ruled out.

Severe Weather Outlook

Residents can expect a cloudy, cool, and rainy weekend ahead with minimal severe weather concerns. Officials report that there are no worries about severe weather, and the region will barely get any lightning throughout the duration of the weather event.
