Halloween Costumes and Hospital Runs on Detroit’s East Side
A five-year-old girl was shot in the chest on a Saturday night while inside her Detroit home on the city’s east side, still wearing her costume after trick-or-treating, ClickOnDetroit reported. Detroit police were dispatched to the Children’s Hospital of Michigan at approximately 9 p.m. after receiving a report of a young child suffering from a gunshot wound.
Investigators traced the shooting scene to a residence located in the 5000 block of Iroquois. Police believe the child was in a back room of the house when gunfire struck the dwelling from the outside.

Police Seek Information as Crucial Details Remain Unconfirmed
As detectives continue to process the scene on Iroquois, several crucial details remain unconfirmed. Investigators have not yet determined whether the gunfire originated from a passing vehicle or from a suspect standing outside the home. Authorities have not released a description of any suspects, a potential motive, or specific updates regarding the victim's current medical condition.
The Detroit Police Department has urged anyone possessing information regarding the shooting to reach out directly to investigators. The incident marks another violent disruption involving a minor in the city, arriving on the heels of a troubling string of October firearm incidents.
A Grim October Following a Summer Decline
This weekend’s shooting contrasts with broader citywide homicide and nonfatal shooting declines recorded earlier in the year. Detroit logged 165 homicides across 2025—marking its lowest total in nearly six decades—and recorded 79 criminal homicides through July 23, 2026, representing a 15.1% decrease over the same timeframe from the previous year, according to MLive data cited by Hoodline. Nonfatal shootings also fell by 5.2% over that same stretch.
Yet, October brought a sharp spike in violence affecting youth across the city. During the week of Oct. 11-13 alone, three separate shootings injured or killed multiple minors and young adults, including a 14-year-old shot on Wabash Street, a seven-year-old girl caught in gunfire alongside her mother during an argument, and a 16-year-old girl killed in a drive-by shooting on Chalmers Street. Police have not stated whether Saturday night’s incident on Iroquois is connected to any of those prior autumn investigations.
