Flock Cameras Help Madison Police Arrest Man Charged in Rape of Student

Alexander Riley Schultz arrested in Madison after alleged assault of middle school student

A 23-year-old man is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly sexually assaulting a juvenile student in Madison, Alabama, according to reports from al.com and 1819news.com. Alexander Riley Schultz of Cullman was taken into custody following an investigation that utilized Flock cameras to track his movements.

The investigation began when a school resource officer in Madison noticed an unidentified man repeatedly transporting a middle school student to and from campus. 1819news.com reported that the officer acted to protect the minor after observing these interactions. This vigilance led to a disclosure from the student, who informed authorities that she had been sexually assaulted by the man. At the time of the initial report, the victim reportedly knew the suspect only by a moniker, and the man had been traveling from Cullman to Madison on multiple occasions to meet her.

The Madison Police Department has charged Schultz with one count of second-degree rape, one count of second-degree sodomy, and one count of traveling to meet a child for an unlawful sex act. He is currently held in the Madison County Jail with bond set at $120,000. Authorities noted that the suspect and the victim had originally met online via Snapchat.

Flock camera technology aids rapid identification and interception

Detectives were able to move quickly from a vague description to a specific suspect by utilizing school security footage and the Flock Safety camera system. While the initial school footage provided only the make, model, color, and the first two digits of the vehicle’s license plate, investigators were able to narrow down the registered owners within minutes of entering the data into the Flock system.

Once Schultz was identified and warrants were issued, the technological trail allowed for a real-time interception. According to Detective Theresa Taylor-Duncan, patrol officers received immediate updates on the suspect’s location and direction of travel. This enabled police to intercept Schultz less than a block from the juvenile victim’s residence, just minutes before a school bus arrived to drop off students.

Police use Flock cameras to identify and arrest child sex crime suspect

The Madison Police Department operates 14 Flock cameras that are shared across various regional and national networks. While the technology was central to this specific arrest, officials emphasized that it serves as a tool for investigation rather than a replacement for traditional police work.

“Flock was an integral part in a fast response, in a fast outcome with this case,” said Madison Police Captain Nic McRae.

Police implement oversight for surveillance technology usage

The department has increased its auditing of Flock usage to at least two times per year to ensure the system is used responsibly and for legitimate public safety purposes.

Access to the camera system is restricted to investigators and supervisors who have completed specific training and signed department policy. Beyond this case, the department has utilized the technology to assist in various other investigations, including missing persons cases involving juveniles and disabled veterans, as well as armed robberies and shootings.

As the investigation continues, authorities indicated that additional charges against Schultz may be possible. While the suspect has been charged, he is considered innocent until proven guilty in a court of law. Police have not released the age of the victim or the specific name of the school she attends.
