Miranda and Hudes Create Musical About Washington Heights

The production’s creative team includes music coordinator Kimberlee Wertz and casting by The Telsey Office. Miranda, who originally starred as Usnavi, wrote the musical’s music and lyrics, while Hudes authored the book. The show’s narrative centers on New York City’s Washington Heights neighborhood, exploring themes of community and identity. A 2020 film adaptation of the musical, directed by Jon M. Chu, was released following the success of Miranda’s Hamilton.

In the Heights Wins Tony Awards Before Film Release

First Look at IN THE HEIGHTS | New York City Center

In the Heights, which debuted in 2005 and later transferred to Broadway, served as a precursor to Miranda’s Hamilton. The original 2008 Broadway production won four Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and was a finalist for the Pulitzer Prize. The current staging at New York City Center follows the musical’s 2020 film release and centers on immigrant stories and cultural heritage.
