The South Dakota Senate Result

Mike Rounds has secured another six-year term in the U.S. Senate, successfully turning back a challenge from independent candidate Brian Bengs. With more than 95% of the vote tallied as of November 4, Rounds held a commanding lead of 184,571 votes to Bengs’s 120,484, according to figures cited by The New York Times and the Associated Press. The outcome was largely expected, as the race had been consistently rated as Solid Republican by major analysts including the Cook Political Report, Sabato’s Crystal Ball, and Inside Elections.

The path to this victory was set in motion months earlier. Rounds effectively cleared his initial hurdle during the June 2 Republican primary, where he defeated Justin McNeal by a margin of 68,943 votes. By the time the general election arrived, the field had narrowed further; Democratic nominee Julian Beaudion withdrew from the race by September 24, leaving Bengs as the sole alternative on the ballot. Legis1 reported that the campaign environment was defined by a significant disparity in resources and outside financial support.

Financial Disparities and Campaign Spending

The financial ledger of the race highlights the scale of the incumbent’s advantage. Rounds raised $5,148,217 over the course of the cycle, compared to $1,855,763 raised by Bengs. The gap in available cash was even more pronounced at the close of the final filing periods, with Rounds reporting $1,295,543 on hand against $69,708 for the Bengs campaign. Beyond direct contributions, independent expenditures skewed heavily in the incumbent’s favor. As of the October 14 cutoff, Legis1 noted that all $565,848 in disbursed outside spending was dedicated to supporting Rounds; no outside funds were reported in support of Bengs.

Much of this outside activity was tied to specialized political action committees. Defend American Jobs, for instance, funneled significant resources into the race, including a notable $400,332.47 transaction on May 26. Meanwhile, the South Dakota Conservative PAC maintained a sustained presence, running a series of disbursements to support Rounds while simultaneously financing ads that opposed Bengs. These advertisements frequently characterized the independent challenger as a Democrat and a “pro-abortion extremist” and juxtaposed him with Joe Biden and Hillary Clinton—labels that Bengs contested throughout the fall.

The money tells a different story about whom Rounds represents.

Bengs argued during a September 3 interview with South Dakota Public Broadcasting, specifically pointing to over $215,000 in contributions from AI and data-center interests. It is important to clarify that this characterization remains a claim made by the challenger and is not an established finding in the official race record. In response, Rounds’s campaign adviser, Rob Skjonsberg, countered that Bengs was “a tool for the Democrat socialists” who would vote as a Democrat’s 51st senator, another allegation that does not constitute a verified fact of the campaign.

Legislative Priorities for the 119th Congress

Having served in the Senate since 2015, Rounds enters his next term with a focus on a range of committee assignments, including Appropriations, Armed Services, Banking, Housing, and Urban Affairs, Environment and Public Works, and Veterans’ Affairs. His legislative record for the 119th Congress, as tracked by Congress.gov, reflects a focus on defense and regional agricultural interests. Among his sponsored legislation are S.5629, which seeks to provide veterans with a path to a second opinion on their medical care, and S.5277, aimed at supporting the domestic cow herd through a new ranchland program.

His work on the Armed Services Committee also highlights an emphasis on technological and strategic readiness. Rounds has sponsored S.5211, which mandates a strategy for cyber cooperation in the Indo-Pacific, and has pushed for development in quantum technologies via S.5139. He has also cosponsored legislation regarding PFAS contamination at Department of Defense installations, a measure that balances local agricultural needs with national defense requirements. Following the election, his constituents are primarily focused on how these specific initiatives will pass through the legislative process in the coming years.
