McGruff the Crime Dog and Mississippi Lawyers Target Trick-or-Treat Safety
“Don’t trick or treat alone, you know the statistics say 70% of kids go without a grownup, which is a wild, wild stat,” said Patrick Wooten, managing partner with Richard Schwartz & Associates Injury Lawyers.
As families across Mississippi prepare for a spooky night of trick-or-treating, legal representatives and a familiar canine icon are hitting local schools to keep the holiday safe. Richard Schwartz & Associates Injury Lawyers launched a state tour visiting Hawkins Elementary School and Woodley Elementary School on Wednesday, wdam.com reported. The firm is visiting eight schools statewide this October, handing out nearly 3,000 reflective Halloween safety bags equipped with essential tips for children and parents.
They are getting some help from McGruff, the Crime Dog. As reported by wdam.com, the popular figure made a special appearance to hand out numerous high fives and hugs to the participating students.
Inside the Firm’s Neighborhood Safety Campaign
Ahead of the festivities, Attorney Patrick Wooten appeared in Studio 3 alongside McGruff to detail the specific hazards families face after dark, wlbt.com reported. Top concerns include traffic after dark, low visibility, and distracted drivers.
To combat these dangers, the firm is educating children and families on core precautions. These include staying in groups, staying on sidewalks, checking candy, and never entering homes or cars. Families are advised to utilize glow sticks or reflective tape, have children stay close, make use of crosswalks, and bring along flashlights.

Drivers face reminders to slow down in neighborhoods, avoid distractions, and watch for children darting between cars, wlbt.com noted.
“So, [we go over] the basics, walk, don’t run, all those simple things that, if they follow it, it can end up being a great day and we can avoid a tragedy,” Wooten said, as reported by wdam.com. Patrick Wooten
Making sure kids are seen and supervised all night remains the campaign’s most critical takeaway for a frightfully fun and safe night.
