The Allen Americans, the ECHL affiliate of the Ottawa Senators and Belleville Senators, dropped the opening game of their three-game series against the New Mexico Goatheads on Wednesday night at the Rio Rancho Events Center. The Goatheads secured a 5-2 victory, marking the team’s first-ever win on home ice.
The scoring began in the first period when New Mexico forward Tyler Paquette found the back of the net. The goal underwent a two-minute review before officials ruled it valid. The Goatheads maintained a slight edge in the opening frame, outshooting the Americans 9-8.
The Americans responded in the second period, erasing the one-goal deficit with two quick scores. Michael Gildon netted his second goal of the season at even strength, followed less than a minute later by a power-play goal from Luke Mistelbacher, which briefly gave the Americans a 2-2 tie. However, New Mexico regained the lead before the period ended with a goal from Briley Wood. By the end of the second frame, the Goatheads held a 20-17 lead in shots on goal.

Third Period Surge Decides the Outcome
The game remained competitive until the third period, when New Mexico’s offense pulled away. Lynden Breen, who leads the Goatheads in goals, notched a shorthanded goal at the 8:13 mark to extend the New Mexico lead. The home team added a final goal late in the period to seal the 5-2 result. The final goal was scored by Max Helgeson at the 15:55 mark, assisted by Evan Friesen.
The disciplinary statistics from the game reflect a physical matchup. There was a high volume of penalties, including multiple high-sticking calls against Jackson Decker in the first period and a series of infractions in the second, including a penalty shot by Grant Ahcan that was saved by Americans goaltender Jesper Vikman.
The three stars of the game were all awarded to New Mexico players: Lynden Breen took the first star, Max Helgeson the second, and Briley Wood the third.
The Allen Americans, currently holding a 4-3-0 record, look to rebound in the second game of the series. The teams are scheduled to face off again on Friday night at the Rio Rancho Events Center, with puck drop set for 8:00 PM North Texas time.
