Boston Red Sox to Explore Trading Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida This Winter
The Boston Red Sox face a persistent outfield logjam that could significantly reshape their roster before the 2027 Major League Baseball season begins. The organization has an outfield logjam featuring Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, Ceddanne Rafaela, Jarren Duran, and Masataka Yoshida, alongside depth options like Eli White and Jahmai Jones.
With Roman Anthony, Wilyer Abreu, and Ceddanne Rafaela holding down key outfield spots for the foreseeable future, veterans Jarren Duran and Masataka Yoshida find themselves in familiar territory. Alex Speier of The Boston Globe noted on Friday that while either player can contribute, the Red Sox are open to dealing one or both to clear regular playing time for younger emerging talent.
Duran enters the winter carrying a uniquely complicated trade value. Despite earning All-Star status and putting together a 20/20 campaign with 69 runs driven in during 2026, his offensive metrics took a sharp downturn. His chase and whiff rates soared last season, leading to a challenging .207/.266/.361 batting line. At the same time, ongoing arbitration raises—projected to push his 2027 salary to roughly $11 million—mean the front office might choose to sell low rather than retain an eight-figure salary without a guaranteed everyday role.

Boston Rejects Massive Padres Trade Offer for Duran
The stark difference in Duran’s trade market compared to previous years highlights how quickly fortunes change in Major League Baseball. Back in 2025, Sean McAdam of MassLive.com reported that the San Diego Padres pursued Duran aggressively, offering a package centered around starting pitcher Dylan Cease and elite catching prospect Ethan Salas when Cease was months away from free agency. Boston rejected those overtures at the time.
Today, the return package will look vastly different. With only two seasons of team control remaining and coming off a year where he batted .207, Duran will not command a star-level return. Interested clubs are expected to buy low, hoping the outfielder can rediscover his previous form, leaving open the very real possibility that Boston fans have seen the last of him in a Red Sox uniform.
