BMW has unveiled the iX4, a coupe-shaped electric SUV built on its Neue Klasse platform, featuring up to 428 miles of EPA-estimated range and starting at $66,200. Set to launch in March 2027 with the 50 xDrive model, the vehicle serves as the automaker’s defense against rising Chinese EV imports in Europe.
BMW is rolling out new technology designed to defend its market share.
BMW iX4 50 xDrive Pricing, Battery Specs, and Range
The BMW iX4 50 xDrive starts at $66,200, excluding destination and handling fees. It packs high-voltage batteries utilizing Gen6
cylindrical lithium-ion cells measuring 46mm in diameter and 95mm in height. These cells deliver a 20 percent increase in energy density compared to the prismatic cells used in BMW’s Gen5 batteries.
The battery housing serves directly as the vehicle’s underbody through a pack-to-open-body
construction, cutting out traditional modules to lower weight and increase torsional rigidity. The system provides 112.2kWh of usable energy and supports an 800-volt architecture capable of delivering up to 428 miles of range based on EPA estimates, outpacing the Tesla Model Y.
Dual-Motor Output and Charging Performance
Performance options include the upcoming iX4 50 xDrive arriving in March 2027 and a high-performance M60 xDrive version later that year. Both models utilize a dual-motor setup. The 50 xDrive puts out 463 horsepower and 475 lb-ft of torque, hitting 0 to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds. Meanwhile, the M60 xDrive pushes out 603 horsepower and 645 lb-ft of torque, cutting a full second off the 50 xDrive’s 0-to-60 time.
An electrically excited synchronous motor on the rear axle serves as the primary drive axle, using electricity instead of permanent magnets.
Thanks to its 800V architecture, the iX4 accepts up to 400kW of DC fast charging. This replenishes up to 184 miles of range in 10 minutes and achieves a 10 to 80 percent charge in 21 minutes. Equipped with a NACS charging port, it will work with over 80,000 Tesla Supercharger connectors globally, alongside bidirectional charging capabilities, an intelligent charging flap, and Plug & Charge support across 10 charging providers.
Panoramic iDrive System Powers Cabin Technology
Inside the cabin, the Panoramic iDrive infotainment system replaces traditional gauge clusters with a heads-up-style projection spanning the full width of the lower windshield. A 17.9-inch free-cut central touchscreen lets drivers drag and drop up to six widgets—such as media, weather, or routing controls—directly onto the windshield display.
For driver assistance, BMW includes a Level 2 system dubbed Symbiotic Drive
for intuitive interaction, allowing drivers to adjust steering or brake without canceling automated functions. The SUV also enables hands-free highway driving, though point-to-point assisted driving will not arrive until 2027 at the earliest.
