Three senior Indonesian police generals were arrested on Tuesday on charges of illegal wiretapping directed against President Prabowo Subianto, cabinet members, and other public figures between 2025 and 2026. The high-profile scandal involves unauthorized surveillance conducted without warrants or formal case files using the Lawful Interception Management System (LIMS), followed by the deletion of wiretap records and server logs.
Arrests and Suspects in the Wiretapping Probe
The National Police’s Criminal Investigation Department (Bareskrim) named and detained multiple high-ranking figures. Department Chief Commissioner General Asep Safrudin identified the suspects at a news conference as Listyo Sigit Prabowo (LSP), a former National Police chief, along with Sonta Nasution (ASN) and Eko Hadi Santoso (EH) at the department’s headquarters in Jakarta. A fourth suspect was subsequently named as Slamet Uliandi, who headed the agency’s Information and Communications Technology Division and served on the supervisory board of the Monitoring Centre wiretapping unit.
Investigators alleged that the accused targeted phone numbers belonging to the president, state officials, politicians, journalists, civil society leaders, and business executives. The arrests follow the recent dismissal of Listyo as police chief by Prabowo, who subsequently reassigned him as presidential chief of staff before the scandal emerged.
Officials Offer Varied Assessments of Legal Proceedings
Government officials offered varied perspectives on the legal proceedings and institutional implications of the arrests. Coordinating Minister for Political and Security Affairs Dudung Abdurachman stated that naming Listyo as a suspect could spur reforms within the National Police, describing the developments as part of a renewal process. However, State Secretary Prasetyo Hadi noted that the offenses could amount to treason, contrasting with Coordinating Minister Yusril Ihza Mahendra’s earlier remark to reporters that investigators had found no signs of sedition.

Meanwhile, the presidential palace declared that the wiretaps should be viewed as an act of treason that could endanger state interests and the safety of the nation’s leadership.
