The United Kingdom announced on Tuesday, October 20, 2026, that it will deploy Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets to Saudi Arabia to conduct defensive air patrols, following a series of escalating Houthi missile and drone attacks targeting regional infrastructure and the capital city of Riyadh.

RAF Typhoon Jets Protect Saudi Cities

The British Ministry of Defence confirmed that Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter jets will carry out air defense missions to help protect Saudi cities and critical national infrastructure. The deployment marks a significant shift in London’s military support for Riyadh, moving into direct participation in protecting the kingdom’s airspace against ongoing aerial threats.

British officials stressed that the aircraft will operate in a strictly defensive capacity. British defense officials emphasized that the fighter jets will not conduct offensive strikes against Houthi positions in Yemen.

The ongoing Houthi attacks on our ally Saudi Arabia are utterly abhorrent. The targeting of Riyadh airport, in particular, reveals the extent to which the Houthis are willing to escalate the situation in the region.

Alongside the Typhoon deployment, the aid package includes an Airbus A400M military transport aircraft to move heavy equipment and defense supplies within Saudi Arabia, as well as military advisors to support Saudi officers. London also extended support for air-to-air refueling to support Saudi defensive air operations.

Saudi Authorities Issue Air Defense Alerts

The military announcement followed a confirmed tactical engagement over the Saudi capital.

Saudi Arabia’s General Directorate of Civil Defense issued public safety advisories through the national early warning platform, notifying residents of the capital to follow safety instructions and avoid gathering or filming at interception sites before confirming that the danger had passed. The alert in Riyadh was part of a broader wave of emergency warnings across the country. On Monday, authorities activated early warnings in four regions, including Riyadh, Al-Kharj, Najran, and Jazan.

Houthis Claim Strikes on Saudi Infrastructure

The escalation follows a series of military announcements from Houthi spokespersons in Yemen claiming extensive drone and missile strikes against economic and military targets inside Saudi Arabia. Yahya Saree, the Houthi military spokesperson, stated that the group executed multiple military operations targeting energy facilities, airports, and military sites, including Aramco facilities and King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh.

The sustained aerial threats have caused significant disruptions across the kingdom’s transport and diplomatic schedules. Aviation analytics data from Cirium showed that more than 45 percent of departing flights from Saudi airports have been canceled since October 8. Additionally, government offices in Riyadh instructed administrative staff to work remotely through the end of the week, while Saudi organizers postponed the Future Investment Initiative conference, known as “Desert Davos,” pushing the event from October 2026 into 2027 to ensure full operational scope and safety.
