After (the way it) started last year against Nitro, we needed a little help,
Greenbrier East head coach Mike Dotson said with a laugh.
That help arrived in the 50th minute on Thursday night, sending the Spartans to a 1-0 win over Bridgeport in the Class AAA state semifinals at the YMCA Paul Cline Memorial Sports Complex. Sophomore Lyla Brown capitalized on a loose ball for the game’s only goal, punching the No. 2 seed Spartans into the state championship match.
Breaking Through a Defensive Stalemate
The semifinal clash began as a tightly contested defensive battle. Both teams struggled to find space during a scoreless first half where the midfield shape stretched and compressed in equal measure. Greenbrier East entered the match carrying the memory of their previous state tournament appearance, where a penalty called in the first minute against Nitro resulted in a 1-0 defeat.

The breakthrough arrived when senior Ava Workman pushed up the right flank and fired a shot toward the Bridgeport goal. Bridgeport goalkeeper Macie Dotson—the niece of Spartans head coach Mike Dotson—parried the initial shot, but the ball popped free in the area. Brown reacted instantly, driving an unobstructed boot into the back of the net to break the deadlock with 30:17 remaining on the clock.
It was crazy because I don’t usually play outside,
Workman said. That’s usually where Lyla is, and we talked about really using our width. And so I just took the width and crossed it in, and she was in perfect position to score.

Coach Dotson noted that the sequence was the exact execution of a halftime tactical adjustment focused on running the line and following up on crosses. The goal stood as the decisive marker in a contest that mirrored the teams’ earlier meeting on August 29, which also ended in a 1-0 victory for the Spartans.
Facing a Dominant Defending Champion
With the semifinal win secured, Greenbrier East (20-3-1) advances to face top-seeded East Fairmont in the state championship match on Saturday at approximately 1:15 p.m. The two teams previously met on October 3, a match that ended in a 2-1 victory for East Fairmont.

The Bees (23-0) have won two consecutive state championships and 68 straight games. East Fairmont punched their ticket to the title match with a 9-1 victory over No. 4 Charleston Catholic in the other semifinal.
We’re excited to play East Fairmont,
Dotson said. I think that’s what we wanted, that’s what they (wanted). So we’re looking forward to Saturday. We’ll see where we can give them a little bit of a struggle. I don’t know. They’re awfully good. Really good.
