IKEA has permanently closed its Annapolis Plan and Order with Pickup location, making it the second site in the Washington metropolitan area to shut down this autumn, The MoCo Show reported.
Closures Across the DMV Region
The Annapolis site ended operations on October 30. That closure followed the October 18 shutdown of IKEA’s Georgetown store. One final regional closure remains on the schedule, with the Fairfax location set to shut its doors on November 30.
These retail contractions form part of a broader corporate strategy by IKEA to shift its operational focus toward home delivery, customer pickup services, and digital shopping channels. Company leadership maintains that the transition aims to build a more affordable, accessible, and sustainable business model.
Impact on Employees and Ongoing Customer Projects
Workers affected by the wave of autumn closures have been offered opportunities to relocate to nearby remaining facilities, including the full-size College Park store.

Customers managing active design and furnishing projects through the shuttered locations can maintain continuity. IKEA confirmed that clients can finish their ongoing work by coordinating with alternative retail locations or collaborating remotely through online channels.
Remaining Regional Footprint
While smaller format and urban test sites wind down, IKEA’s larger traditional footprint and select boutique studios in the area continue normal operations. The full-size College Park store remains open to shoppers. The Plan and Order location at Rio in Gaithersburg, which opened in March 2024 at 101 Boardwalk Place, keeps its doors open seven days a week from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Unlike standard warehouses, the Gaithersburg studio operates without immediate product and food stock on hand. Instead, customers book time with specialists to plan, price, and order specific layout components for kitchens, bathrooms, and bedrooms.
