Sentencing Adjourned in Navan Road Death Case
The sentencing hearing for Aaron O’Connell, the 26-year-old man who pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing the death of 16-year-old Mia Lily Keogh O’Keeffe, has been adjourned at Trim Circuit Court.
Mia Lily Keogh O’Keeffe died following an incident at Black Castle Demesne on the Slane Road in Navan on February 21 of this year. In addition to the charge of dangerous driving causing death, O’Connell, a resident of Beaufort Place in Navan, entered guilty pleas regarding his failure to remain at the scene and his failure to offer assistance following the collision.
Judge Grants Legal Aid for Psychiatric Evaluation Before Sentencing
During the hearing before Judge John Martin, O’Connell affirmed his guilty pleas. His legal counsel informed the court that the defendant remains remorseful for the loss of Mia Lily’s life and the ongoing grief experienced by her family and friends. To ensure the court has a complete picture for sentencing, Judge Martin granted legal aid to commission a psychiatric report. This evaluation, alongside a probation report and a victim impact statement, will be essential for the court to reach a final decision.

The family of Mia Lily had expressed a hope that the legal process would be finalized before the first anniversary of the tragedy. While Judge Martin acknowledged the weight of that timeline, he noted that his ability to accelerate the process is constrained by the time required to complete the psychiatric evaluation. He did, however, commit to requesting that the report be expedited to avoid unnecessary delays.
The judge formally adjourned the case to 9 February next. O’Connell has been remanded on bail until that date. Before concluding the session, Judge Martin expressed his formal sympathies to the family of Mia Lily Keogh O’Keeffe, acknowledging the profound difficulty of the months leading up to the new hearing date.
