A federal immigration agent shot and wounded a 28-year-old man during a targeted enforcement operation in the Marble Hill neighborhood of the Bronx on Thursday afternoon. The incident left the man hospitalized while a five-year-old child was in the suspect’s vehicle, triggering protests and condemnation from city officials.
Agent Shoots Man in Marble Hill
Gunfire erupted in a residential area crowded with students and commuters at approximately 4:00 p.m. on October 8, 2026, near the intersection of Marble Hill Avenue and West 225th Street. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) conducted the operation. The NYPD stated its officers were not involved and were absent when the shooting occurred, though the department later arrived to assist with crowd control and evidence collection.
Video footage showed a grey vehicle in the middle of the road with a bullet hole in the windshield. Another video depicted an agent in a yellow vest holding what appeared to be an assault rifle while speaking on a phone. Police officers were seen lifting a wounded man and placing him into a police vehicle for transport to a hospital.
Details of the Encounter
The 28-year-old man suffered a graze wound to the neck and is conscious at a nearby hospital. The five-year-old child in the back seat was uninjured and later placed into the custody of family members by the NYPD. A federal official indicated one agent may have been injured in a car accident during the event.
Authorities noted the man had been arrested twice in New York City in 2023 and 2025.
Leaders Demand Accountability
The mayor reported spending hours on the phone with President Donald Trump and DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin to negotiate the man’s release, but those efforts were unsuccessful. We will not normalize ICE's viciousness. We will not accept its cruelty,
Mamdani said.
New York Governor Kathy Hochul demanded answers from federal authorities, stating she urged the president and the DHS secretary to halt ICE enforcement operations in New York. Local city council members and the governor called for the DHS to release all available body camera footage and for the state attorney general’s office to launch an independent investigation.

Investigation Into Federal Force
Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) has taken over the inquiry, though federal authorities have not provided a detailed explanation of what led to the shooting. The New York Immigration Coalition (NYIC) and the group Hands Off NYC held an emergency press conference in the neighborhood to express anger and concern.
According to a report by The New York Times, federal immigration officers have been involved in at least two dozen shootings since the current administration took office in 2025, resulting in at least six deaths. Community members continue to demand full transparency regarding the use of force.
