China secured US$45 billion in clean industry investment in 2026, accounting for 49 per cent of all such plants operating or under construction worldwide, according to a global investment tracker report published this November.

Global Investment Tracker Points to China as Clean Industry Leader

The Mission Possible Partnership released figures showing that the country drew $45 billion in energy transition investments over the past year. That financial influx positions China as a leader in wind, solar, batteries, and other alternative energy sources, Oilprice reported.

The organization tracks decarbonization projects across hard-to-abate sectors of the economy. These include lower-carbon cement, steel production, sustainable aviation fuel, clean methanol, clean ammonia, and aluminum smelting powered by greener energy sources.

Record Final Investment Decisions Reach 36 Globally

Commercial-scale industrial decarbonization projects achieved a record milestone over the 12-month tracking period. Across the globe, 36 projects reached a final investment decision, with 23 of those decisions concentrated in China, according to data highlighted by the Mission Possible Partnership.

Leading sectors during this period included sustainable aviation fuel, methanol, and clean ammonia. The latest wave brings the total number of financed or constructed commercial decarbonization projects worldwide to 189, with 93 located in China. An additional 838 projects are either announced or currently under development globally.

Renewable Power Demand Rivals Data Centers for Grid Capacity

Securing access to low-cost renewable power remains a critical hurdle for these low-carbon industrial operations. The pipeline of announced projects requires an estimated 3,500 terawatt-hours of electricity per year, representing 12 per cent of current global power demand, as noted in reporting by Zaobao.

Clean industrial projects must compete directly with the rapidly growing data center sector for available electricity supplies. Electrical grids face mounting pressure and struggle to keep pace with this surging demand.

Domestically, China’s National Energy Administration reported that installed wind and solar power generation capacity surpassed 2 billion kW by the end of September. The country added 170 million kW of new capacity over the first nine months of the year.

Despite leading global alternative energy investments, China remains a major consumer of hydrocarbons and energy commodities. The country continues to build the majority of the world’s new coal power generation capacity, relying on coal for nearly 50 per cent of its total power generation.
