Robert Pattinson Screen Tests for James Bond in a Surprise 007 Casting Contender Shift
In a surprise few saw coming, Robert Pattinson has emerged as a contender for 007. Several insiders have informed The Hollywood Reporter that the 40-year-old performer has auditioned on camera to play James Bond, putting him alongside other prospective candidates Jack Lowden, Callum Turner, and Josh O’Connor. Traditionally, prevailing opinion held that the individual chosen for the lethal license wouldn’t be an internationally famous celebrity on the level of Pattinson—who ranks among his generation’s top movie stars and already anchors DC Studios’ Batman series.
The screen tests are said to have occurred the weekend of Oct. 24. Earlier statements shared by The Hollywood Reporter indicated that four or possibly five performers were being considered, though only three names had emerged initially. Another name now surfacing as one of the Bond mystery men is Nicholas Hoult, a runner-up to Pattinson for Batman years ago. Pattinson is a favorite of auteurs from Robert Eggers and the Safdie brothers to Christopher Nolan, whose 2020 spy movie Tenet might feel like a Bond audition in hindsight. More importantly, he worked with Denis Villeneuve on the upcoming Dune: Part 3, which bows Dec. 18 and is said to have gone well for the two men.
The Franchise Architecture Under Amazon and Producing Heavyweights
Having a starring part in Nolan’s The Odyssey, sharing top billing in the A24 success The Drama, and carrying the well-received A24 film Primetime, the performer finds himself right in the middle of the most significant year of his professional journey. He’s currently filming The Batman Part II in London, where screen tests have been taking place. Amazon had no comment on the testing. While conventional wisdom goes against a world-famous Bond, these are unprecedented times in the franchise. Control over the upcoming James Bond picture now rests with Amazon following their February 2025 acquisition of the creative rights previously held by the Broccoli family. Producing are Spider-Man’s Amy Pascal and David Heyman, producer of the Harry Potter movies.
Pattinson’s career initially took off through a sorrowful part in 2005’s Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire, prior to his ascent to worldwide renown via Twilight a few years afterward. The current search to cast James Bond arrives two decades and a year after Daniel Craig secured the role back in October 2005. Having completed five installments, Craig stepped away from the character following the release of 2005’s successor No Time to Die in 2021, an era marked by the series’ sole billion-dollar blockbuster, the 2012 release Skyfall.
